Intel WiDi lets you share videos and more from a Windows machine to another screen.

Wireless Display or WiDi is a technology created by Intel to stream media from a Windows device—including desktop PCs, laptops, tablets and smartphones—to another screen—such as TV. The content is streamed wirelessly over the local WiFi network. Intel WiDi is the execution of that technology and freeware that everyone can download and use without charge.

Intel WiDi is official Intel software, and you can download it directly from the Intel website, so there is no concern over viruses and other malware. Once installed on a Windows device you can stream HD videos as well as music, photos and even apps. You can, for instance, use your favorite app from the comfort of your living room and have the advantage of the big screen.

Note that receiving screens require integrated WiFi support or must be upgraded with it. Although this was an important consideration when Intel WiDi was first introduced, it became more of an afterthought when smart televisions became the norm and most featured wireless adapters.

The final version of Intel WiDi released in 2015 is WiDi 6.0. It supports 1080p at 60 frames per second. It also supports 3D content, Blu-ray, touch functionality and USB devices. The 6.0 version in particular added support for 5 GHz Wi-Fi as well as 4K and Ultra HD displays.

Intel began developing Intel WiDi when software for sharing media to screens wirelessly was still in its infancy. Other solutions were developed in parallel, such as Miracast which is arguably the more robust solution and now supported out of the box on all Windows devices. Intel WiDi began to make less and less sense, and Intel finally suspended development as well as all support. You can still download and use Intel WiDi, but other screen sharing apps have continued to evolve in the meantime.
